RENOVATION: Expectation vs. Reality

Updated: Feb 20, 2019

Renovation, to some can signify the beginning of something new and beautiful, while to others (most likely to those who have done it before) it can signify the beginning of something messy & utterly chaotic. We have all seen those home improvement shows where you start with a simple renovation project and suddenly you have uncovered new problems and additional costs that you never knew existed. But, is that true of every renovation? I would think that with proper preparations, planning and execution you would raise your success rate considerably. Using certified contractors, workman and quality products would also ensure that you have done everything in your power to avoid those hidden problems. So I ask, how do you manage your expectations going into a renovation?

THE EXPECTATION

We all want to turn our houses into beautiful homes. Places where we raise our families, spend time with our loved ones, feel relaxed and most comfortable to be our true selves. But like us, our homes grow tired over time and need to be refreshed. Sometime its just small tweaks that can update a space or other times substantial renovations are necessary to best suit your individual needs.

The expectation when renovating is often that everything will go according to plan. The timeline will be exactly as discussed. The materials will fit flawlessly into your home as if they had been there all along and usually & most importantly, the budget that was assigned will remain in tact. Does that sound too good to be true? You know what they say about that...

THE REALITY

More often then not, there is always some kind of setback when doing home renovations. Especially to those older and more mature properties. To me, it's important to always allow for extra time and money when planning these renovations. Think of it like insurance. Hopefully you never have to use it, but it is there should anything arise. It's your rainy day fund should there be a storm. It's important to step back and keep your eye on the renovation prize. Remember why you were making these updates in the first place. Think about how good the new space is going to look once it's all put back together again!

THE OUTCOME

Think back to those design shows you’ve seen. More often then not, even after the hidden problems, extra time and money spent, the outcome is something beautiful. A new fresh space that is completely suited to your individual needs or taste. A space that you have made truly your own.

Renovations can be scary. Align yourself with trustworthy professionals who can guide you through the process using their knowledge and craftsmanship to best serve you and your needs. Our dreams can become reality if we put our mind to it, so if you align your expectations with reality, you will never be disappointed.
